NEW BEDFORD — Earth Day is marking a big milestone on Wednesday, but the coronavirus pandemic will have most people celebrating from inside their homes.

Originally, the 50th anniversary of Earth Day was going to light up Pier 3 at the city’s waterfront with a soundstage for music and special speakers, while the lot was going to feature family art activities, interactive informational tables, and earth-friendly food and shopping booths. There was even going to be a march consisting of 2020 steps through the city.

“We are disappointed to have to give up what was going to be an amazing event,” said Susan Sargent, an artist and original organizer of EarthDay 2020 in New Bedford.
